Australian Olympic Gold Medallists

Between September 17th and October 2nd, Australia Post  issued stamps depicting each Australian Gold medallist from the Olympic Games. When a gold medal is won, digital photographs were taken and transmitted to the Sydney design studios where an image was selected and electronically sent to print sites in six cities.  At the print site, the image was transferred to pre-printed base stock and distributed for general sale. 

 Digital Prints

Each city produced digitally printed sheets with an identifying imprint of a fauna emblem:

  Stocks of digitally printed stamps were on public sale from 12 noon the day after the medal presentation.

Offset Stamps

All offset printing was done in Melbourne, Australia. The imprint identifying the offset stamps was a stylized map of Australia. These stamps were on public sale from 12 noon three days after the medal presentation.

After careful examination, Australian editor Ron McKean reported that there was absolutely no indication of any kind as to whether they are digital or offset, or where they were printed. When the digital and offset issues are placed side-by-side, the digital image is slightly clearer and marginally brighter. If you only had one stamp it would be impossible to identify its origins or distinguish it as either printing method. He says, "I see no reason for distinguishing the variations as they cannot be positively identified, other than in complete sheets with imprint."
