Catherine the Great of Russia acquired East Belorussia (White Russia) in the Polish partition of 1772. She gained Minsk, 1793, and the remainder in 1795. West Belorussia was ceded to Poland in 1921 as part of the Treaty of Riga which ended the Soviet-Polish War. It was regained by the Soviet Union as part of the Nazi-Soviet Non-aggression Pact of 1939. Belorussia became Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic and was admitted to the United Nations in 1945. The country declared independence in 1991.
