VIEIRA, Antonio (1608-1697) Portuguese Jesuit, missionary, diplomat, author, preacher.
Born in Lisbon on February 6, 1608, he came with his parents to Bahia at the age of eight.
Educated by the Jesuits, he entered their Order in 1623 and he took his first vows in
1625. He served among the Indians and Negroes before turning to the pulpit in 1635. he
returned to Portugal with the son of the Marques de Montalvao and shortly thereafter his
preaching attracted the attention of the court. Named preacher to the crown, he carried
out diplomatic missions to England, France, Holland, and Italy. Apparently he became too
influential at court to suit his religious order and he was sent to Maranhao in 1652. For
the next six years he established a large chain of missions and he converted thousands of
Indians, but his labors were brought to an abrupt end in 1661 when the colonists, who
resented his efforts to prevent the enslavement of the Indians, secured his expulsion from
Brazil. because some of his ideas announced from the pulpit as well as privately, his
enemies brought him to trail by the Inquisition. Although placed under house arrest, his
sentence was eventually lifted and in 1669 he made a successful trip to Rome in which he
received a writ freeing his person from further interference from the Holy Office in
Portugal. For the remainder of his life he spent preaching and writing. In 1681 he
returned to Brazil. he died in Bahia on January 18, 1697 - Reference: ELAH GEDLGEPB HDB NCE

VIGO, Francis (1747-1836) Italian fur trader. Born December 3, 1747, in the town of
Mondovi in what is now northern Italy. Little is known of his early life until he enlisted
in a Spanish regiment and was sent to New Orleans, then a possession of Spain. After his
discharge, Vigo entered the fur trade. By 1772, he was established as a merchant and
trader in St. Louis in Spanish Upper Louisiana. Later, as a business associate of Spanish
Lieutenant Governor Fernando de Leyba, Vigo was quite successful trading among the area's
Indians and French settlers. Vigo, in St. Louis, decided to support Clark and the
Americans by furnishing them with supplies from his own stores. In making this decision,
Vigo no doubt was influenced by the assistance being given the Americans by Governor de
Leyba. Vigo also loaned Clark money to pay the local inhabitants for needed goods. Vigo's
visible assistance was noted by the French and further solidified their support behind
Clark. He was taken prisoner by the British and was held for several days. Vigo was
released on the condition that on his way back to St. Louis, he do nothing that would harm
the British cause. Vigo complied with the letter, if not the spirit, of this agreement by
first returning to St. Louis before starting out for Kaskaskia to report to Clark.
Arriving on January 29, 1779, he provided Clark with valuable detailed information on the
situation at Vincennes. Vigo told Clark that the British intended to descend upon the
Americans at Kaskaskia in the spring and that they would not expect the Americans to
attack them at Vincennes during the winter. Clark later wrote of Vigo: "in sho[r]t we
got Every Information from this Gentn [gentleman] that we could wish for as he had had
good opportunities and had taken great pains to inform himself with a design to give
intelligence...." Vigo's service to the United States continued during the remainder
of the Revolution and in the years following. By 1783, Vigo had moved to Vincennes where
he spent most of the next 50 years working in the fur trade and serving as a colonel in
the militia. His business affairs eventually suffered setbacks; virtually impoverished, he
died at age 88 in 1836. He was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Vincennes. - United States

VILLA LOBOS, Heitor (1887-1959) Brazilian composer, conductor, and educator. Born in
Rio de Janeiro on March 5, 1887, he was tutored in music by his father, a writer and
amateur cello player. His father died in 1899 and as his mother did not like music, it was
not until 1907 he was able to enter the National Institute of Music in Rio de Janeiro. but
he became bored there and he sent out to journey in the interior of Brazil, where he
gathered a rich collection of Indian songs. The turning point in his career came when he
met the pianist Arthur Rubinstein, who was
phenomenally successful in Rio. He composed for Rubinstein the difficult piano piece,
Rudepoema (1921-1926). Villa-Lobos received a Brazilian government grant to study in
France and after his return in 1930, he was appointed director of music education in Rio
de Janeiro. In 1945 he established in Rio the Brazilian Academy of Music. During the years
1947 to 1949 he made tours to Europe and the United States. Called one of t he most
original composers of the twentieth century, Villa-Lobos produced during his lifetime more
than two thousand compositions. These included operas, ballets, church music, choral
works, orchestral music, band music, chamber music, guitar music, pianoforte music, songs,
etc. He died in Rio de Janeiro on November 17, 1959 - References: BBDM GDMM GEDL HDB RML -
